Return to Varkala!

Namaskaaram!

Going back to Varkala after 4 years was indeed a great memory refresher. It was nostalgic to come back to this beautiful beach & cliff-blessed town in Kerala. And what better occasion other than the first-ever trip for us after we started Vlogabonds!

Go Vlogabonds!

Our family’s history with Palm Tree Heritage go back to the beginning of 2018 when we first discovered the property. The property’s owner, Mr. Babu, and their energetic manager, Mr. Amir, made us feel at home ever since we stepped inside the property. So it was only natural that Palm Tree Heritage was the first place we thought of for unwinding for a couple of days after getting our lives back together and cleaning our house after the disastrous Kerala floods in August 2018. We’ve gone back to the property at least 5 or 6 times since that because of their beautiful location, their delicious food and of course, their unmatched hospitality. From the room boy to the owner of the property, they have always ensured that we felt pampered and taken care of. When one of our family members felt ill unexpectedly while we were staying at Palm Tree Heritage, they arranged for medicines to be brought to us and even got us a doctor’s appointment at a nearby hospital. They did this without expecting anything in return. We think the maximum we’ve done for them till now is give good feedback on Google and tell our friends about them.

When we decided to start Vlogabonds, we didn’t have to even discuss where we wanted to start from. Palm Tree Heritage was the decision in a matter of seconds and that too, unanimously! They have changed quite a few things since our last visit and they were all quite interesting. They have constructed 3 new sea-facing cottages, and we had the good fortune of staying in one of them. What a brilliant view those cottages have! You will be able to see all the photos with THE view in our website as well as the videos. The new sea-facing cottages were apparently built by sourcing materials from a heritage site. They did a great job in infusing the Kerala culture into a modern cottage. The cottage is very comfortable and the view from the cottage is to-die-for or to-kill-for. The private beach this property has is definitely one of the biggest attractions. The beach is hardly a 30-seconds walk from any part of the property. To give you a small example of their hospitality, they allow guests from the neighbouring resorts to access their private beach. They have also constructed a new dining area about a hundred feet from the beach and it provides you with a view that is pretty much unmatched.

We reached the property by lunch time and we were treated to the proper Kerala-style lunch which included rice, fish curry, chicken fry, side dishes (thoran) made from cabbage & potato, and pappadam. We were quite hungry by the time we reached Palm Tree Heritage and this was just what we needed. We went around the property post-lunch looking at all the changes that have come about in the past 4 years.

Since we had some time on our hands, we took off to Varkala Cliff, which is another spot we love. This place has everything – cafés, restaurants, shops selling shawls and t-shirts with psychedelic prints, and regular mom-and-pop shops that sell everything from cigarettes to mineral water bottles. We chilled for about an hour on the cliff at a café trying out milkshakes, cake slices and chocoballs. When we were planning to leave, we were stranded in the café for another hour, courtesy a thunderous passing storm that showed no mercy on anyone. Tourists were seen walking back to their accommodations drenched in the rain, but we didn’t see anyone complaining. People who were inside the café were thankful that they had a roof over their heads and that they were dry, and people who were walking on the footpath looked happy that they were getting drenched.

By the time we got back and freshened up, we were in for another surprise. The property had prepared a steamed Butter Fish with garlic with portions of vegetable salad and French fries to support. Honestly, the entire fish can be eaten by 4 people, but we had to somehow finish it. It had to be one of the heaviest and tastiest meals we’ve ever had. The fish tasted so good with the salad and French fries that it got over in less than 15 minutes.

Since our cottage was right on the sea-facing side, we could hear the waves crashing throughout the night onto the wall of stones at the edge of the property. We had a very peaceful and comfortable sleep.

Breakfast in the morning was simple and tasty. We had bread-omelette and coffee/tea, which was quite filling. As the check-out time neared, we felt sad about leaving this dreamy property, but decided to come back with our families another time so that they can enjoy all the things we both enjoyed. Hopefully we get to reserve the sea-facing cottages next time as well so that everyone can enjoy the latest offering at the Palm Tree Heritage. As always, we wish the owner, their current manager (Mr. Nishan), the members of staff and everyone associated with Palm Tree Heritage the best of luck. We sincerely hope you receive more bookings than you can handle and prosper!
