If you’re in the mood for something sweet – perhaps something to tie off that perfect meal or a small mid-afternoon pick me up, The German Bakery on the beautiful cliffs of Varkala will have you taken care of.
Arriving after a very amazing lunch during our trip to Palm Tree Heritage, I had my sights set on the almond cake and my brother decided to go with a Choco-Walnut cake and since I couldn’t really just pick one delicious treat, I decided to add another treat to the table – Nepalese Chocolate Balls.
There were two options – Swedish Chocolate balls or Nepalese Chocolate balls, the distinction is small but quite a big one in taste. The Swedish version uses oats as a base while the Nepalese one uses cookies/biscuits as a base. Never having been one to pick oats over cookies, the choice was clear!

The Chocolate balls were delicious, they were sweet but not overpowering with sugar, the taste of the cocoa came through very well, once again making me glad that I didn’t opt for the oats version, although I am sure it will be tasty in its own way, in spite of the oats. Can you tell that I am not a fan of oats?
But the star of the show for me was the Almond cake, each layer of the cake had creamy sugar based vanilla frosting accompanied with the almond topping, it was truly a hearty feast. I am ashamed to say I couldn’t finish it.

Having had a taste of my brother’s choice of the Choco Walnut cake was actually a nice respite from the sugary sweetness as the flavour was much more toned down and more palatable if you don’t have a sweet tooth.
Our choices of drinks, his a chocolate milk shake and mine a Watermelon Smoothie that had a dash of mint was a perfect palette cleanser between bites.

The entire ensemble here set us back just Rs. 620 (Approx 9$) not a bad way to spend an afternoon I’d say! If you’re ever in the cliff area, drop by The German Bakery to get the ‘sweetest’ taste Varkala has to offer.
